A Chair with a Purpose: Honoring Survivors and Remembering Loved Ones
by Amanda Mabry
When I was invited to contribute to a cancer survivor fundraiser, I knew I wanted to create something that was both beautiful and deeply meaningful. I chose to revamp an old chair into a vibrant planter, transforming it into a living piece of art that honors the strength of survivors and the memory of those we’ve lost.
The idea of turning the chair into a planter came from the symbolism of growth and renewal. Flowers bloom with care and time—just as survivors continue to grow and heal through their journeys. A chair represents support and rest, qualities that are so vital to those battling cancer.
Stenciled across the chair are multicolored cancer ribbons, each representing a different type of cancer. I’ve included the names of survivors I know from my church and workplace—people who have shown remarkable courage. But this chair is also a tribute to those who are no longer with us.
My father passed away from lung cancer when he was just 41. His loss left a hole in my heart that has never fully healed. My husband also lost both of his parents to cancer. These experiences have left a permanent mark on our lives and are part of the reason I pour so much care and intention into this project.
This chair is more than a creative piece—it’s a symbol of love, remembrance, and hope. It's for those who survived, for those still fighting, and for those we carry in our hearts every day. My hope is that it brings comfort, sparks conversation, and inspires continued support for those affected by cancer.
