Needle Felted Butterflies Kit
In your kit, you have enough wool roving to create multiple butterflies.
Start by separating out a length of your colored roving for your first butterfly.
Place your Butterfly shape on your felting pad, and spread the roving flat over the top of the shape. You can separate the roving a bit on the sides to follow the split in the top and bottom wings on either side.
Begin needling straight down in the center of your shape. You don’t need to needle too hard into the felting pad, just enough to condense your roving down to create a smooth flat shape. Work your way out to the sides, and then bend or fold the roving that extends beyond your shape inside the guide and needle that down as well.
Always be mindful of where your needle is in relation to your fingers! This is another reason it’s good to start with a light hand, so that any spatial learning curves don’t draw blood or bruise your fingers!
Once you’ve got a fairly flat shape insdie your guide, you can pull it out and flip it over. The Butterfly is symetrical so this should be easy. You can then lightly felt the opposite side to make sure both sides are nice and smooth.
Finally add the body detail to the front by pulling a thin strip of black wool and felting down the center. Remember that a little black wool will go a long way! You want to very lightly pinch the ends of your roving to pull away a small wisp of fiber. You can always layer more, but it’s harder to remove chunky pieces of black roving without distorting the work you’ve already done.
