Needle Felted Bees Kit
In your kit, you have enough wool roving to create at least 3 bees, depending on the size bee you want to create.
Start by separating out a length of yellow roving for your first bee.
You’ll want to roll your roving, using your felting needle to secure it as you roll. Once you have the basic shape you’ll begin lightly needling the body of your bee. The felting needle works by using slight barbs to pull individual wool fibers into your shape to knot and mat the fibers into place. The more forcefully you needle into your work, the more you will compress the shape. It’s best to start needling with a light hand as you learn how quickly the shape forms.
Always be mindful of where your needle is in relation to your fingers! This is another reason it’s good to start with a light hand, so that any spatial learning curves don’t draw blood or bruise your fingers!
Once you’ve shaped the body of your bee and you are content with the density of the shape, you’ll want to begin adding details.
Remember that a little black wool will go a long way! You want to very lightly pinch the ends of your roving to pull away small wisps of fiber for your stripes, eyes and mouth. Remember you can always layer more, but it’s harder to remove chunky pieces of black roving without distorting the work you’ve already done.
Finally, you’ll create your wings. You can of course create two separate wings to attach to your bee, but I find it easier to create one light circle and then pinch it together in the center & felt for a set of wings you can attach at the center.
To attach you simply needle the wings into place. It’s best if you not only needle together from the top but also from the sides on the under side of the wings for the best attachment.
